El Gorbeia Natural Park It extends on both sides of the Cantabrian-Mediterranean divide, combining humid and sunny slopes that form a mosaic of highly valuable ecosystems. More than 70% of the territory is covered by forests, with extensive and well-preserved beech groves, especially on the Álava side. Also notable are the Pyrenean oak forests, Pyrenean oak (Quercus pyrenaica) forests, wetlands such as Saldropo, and areas of pasture and heathland.
Crowned by the iconic Gorbeia cross—a large metal structure almost 17 meters high, erected at the end of the XNUMXth century as a symbol of Basque mountaineering —, this area offers landmarks such as the Itxina karst, the Gujuli waterfall, and the Mairuelegorreta cave. The presence of traditional huts and farmhouses bears witness to the long history of livestock and cultural use of the land.
The park is ideal for activities such as hiking, bird and amphibian watching, rutting, mycology, and enjoying the pollarded beech trees. It is also a highly valued space for environmental education and direct contact with nature.
El Gorbeia Natural Park It can be visited at any time of the year, but spring, summer and autumn are especially recommended.
In spring, the beech trees sprout vigorously, the wetlands are alive, and the wildlife is very active, allowing you to enjoy the songs of forest birds and a wide variety of amphibians. It's also the best time to see the Gujuli waterfall in all its splendor, thanks to the flow brought by the snowmelt and the rains.
Summer offers long days and pleasant temperatures for hiking trails, climbing peaks like Gorbea, or visiting iconic sites like the Mairuelegorreta Cave.
Autumn, for its part, transforms the park's forests into a unique chromatic spectacle, ideal for landscape photography and observing the rut, which takes place in the quieter areas of the mountain range. It's also a perfect time for mushroom tourism, as mushrooms proliferate in the damp beech forests, with the added benefit of being outside of peak visitor seasons.
El Gorbeia Natural Park The park offers a multitude of opportunities to discover its natural and cultural riches. Among its forests, the beech groves of Sarria, Zárate, Izartza, and Albertia invite you to immerse yourself in landscapes of great beauty, especially in autumn, when the colors transform the surroundings. The climb to the Cruz del Gorbea, the park's emblematic peak, is one of the classic Basque hiking routes and offers spectacular panoramic views of the surroundings.
To the southwest, on the Álava side, the Gujuli waterfall impresses with its drop of over 100 meters, visible from a nearby viewpoint. In the steepest part of the massif, the Itxina karst and the Baltzola cave, accessible via the picturesque Gentiles bridge, allow you to delve deeper into the rocky landscape and the most representative geological formations of the park.
