Ponga Natural Park and Biosphere Reserve

Located in the municipality of Ponga, in eastern Asturias, is this natural park with rugged terrain, mature forests, and deep gorges. Also declared a Biosphere Reserve, Ponga stands out for its biodiversity, its mountainous landscape, and a network of well-preserved ecosystems, where nature, rural heritage, and traditions coexist in harmony.

Description

El Ponga Natural Park and Biosphere Reserve It preserves some of the wildest and most spectacular landscapes in the Asturian mountains. From the 300-meter valley floor to the more than 2.100 m peak of Peña Ten, the rugged terrain gives rise to gorges such as Ponga and Los Beyos, and natural viewpoints with exceptional views.

Its forests cover more than a third of the territory, with the Peloño beech-oak forest being one of the best-preserved in Asturias. These forests are home to a wealth of wildlife, with forest birds such as the woodpecker, the black woodpecker, the Eurasian treecreeper, the marsh tit, and the goldcrest. Along sunny paths, it is not uncommon to see the green-and-black lizard warming itself in spring, while amphibians such as the common frog and the common salamander can be seen among the damp leaf litter of the beech forest. In summer, the forest's pine flowers attract the delicate alpine Rosalia, a cerambycid with long antennae and bluish hues that is among the most unique invertebrates in the Park. In the mountain passes and mountain passes where cows and sheep graze, it is possible to spot large birds of prey such as the Egyptian vulture, the griffon vulture, the golden eagle, and, with luck, the bearded vulture, which is currently recovering in the Cantabrian Mountains.

The presence of traditional villages and local products such as Beyos cheese complete the uniqueness of this space, perfect for hiking, wildlife observation, and landscape photography in a peaceful and tranquil setting. Particularly notable among the park's traditional architecture is the Beyusco granary, a unique, small type characterized by the horizontal arrangement of planks that make up its walls. It represents one of the most distinctive elements of the area's ethnographic heritage.
