Courel Mountains Xeopark

Located in the province of Lugo, Galicia, the Montañas do Courel Park encompasses a territory of rugged mountain ranges, deep valleys, and geology that forms part of the peninsula's first landforms, preserving the traces of the first reliefs that emerged from the sea to form the Iberian Peninsula. Spread across the municipalities of Folgoso do Courel, Quiroga, and Ribas de Sil, this space is a true open-air museum where nature, history, and traditional life coexist in balance.

Description

El Courel Mountains Xeopark It is one of the most unique areas in Galicia due to its geological, landscape, and cultural richness. Nestled on the Iberian Massif, it displays exceptional lithological variety, with more than 90 listed geological sites, five of which are recognized as Geosites, i.e., sites of global geological significance. All of them are linked to the Tumbado do Courel Syncline, an impressive structure that is a unique testament to the Variscan Orogeny. Furthermore, more than one hundred Roman-era gold mines have been located in this area, traces of which are still visible in the landscape and which are deeply rooted in the area's geological history, forged during the Paleozoic Era.

This UNESCO Global Geopark is also a haven for biodiversity, with native forests such as the Devesa do Corvo, the Devesa das Valiñas, the Devesa de Paderne, and, the most famous of all, the Devesa da Rogueira, a botanical gem. It also has four flora microreserves, aligned along a limestone stratum that runs through the northern sector of the Geopark and notable for their richness in orchids, with no fewer than 20 different species, among which the endemic ones stand out. Dactylorhiza cantabricaAs for wildlife, the expanding brown bear finds one of its natural habitats here. Throughout its valleys and mountains, the landscape is combined with a valuable ethnographic heritage: villages built with local materials and whose walls have been constructed using dry stone art (a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity), archaeological remains from Roman mining, and trails that allow you to explore this fusion of geology and culture.

With geological routes, marked trails, and panoramic viewpoints, the Courel Mountains invite you to explore a territory shaped by time… and by life.
