Ecotourism Commitment

The immersion experience includes raising awareness about the need to protect the forest, and at the end, participants are encouraged to help clean up the surroundings if they notice any objects on the ground that don't belong there.
We also provide you with the Responsible Tourist Guide, prepared by the Basque Government, a few days before your trip.

Sustainable tourism

Caserío Montehermoso, committed to sustainable tourism:

  • The family homestead was renovated using sustainable construction principles. We used lime mortar to clad the walls and gave a new lease of life to old furniture and objects, including the access fence to the accommodations, which was made with wood reclaimed from the salt pans of Salinas de Añana.
  • The rural complex's heating system is a combination of biomass (wood) and aerothermal energy. We heat the accommodations and showers with wood from our sustainable forests, self-generated electricity, and the energy present in the air.
  • We have outdoor ecological spas, which we heat with wood, and we reuse the water to irrigate the gardens and the orchard.
  • We use energy-efficient appliances, and the apartment lighting uses LEDs, just like the streetlights in the town where we're located.
  • We provide our guests with natural and vegan amenities (shampoo, body wash, and conditioner).
  • Our rural resort is guided by waste reduction, recycling, and promoting composting among our guests.
  • We grow our own seasonal organic garden and use vegetables and berries from our orchard to prepare our breakfasts.
  • We promote environmental awareness among our youth with a Sustainable Traveler Diploma, which we award to those who meet the requirements we've designed to earn this title (including not littering in the mountains or even picking up other people's remains if they find plastic, cans, or glass in nature).
  • We have recycling bins at the rural complex, and each apartment has its own compost bin. We teach composting to guests who want to learn how to do it again at home.
  • To close the cycle, we fertilize our orchards and gardens with the compost we all produce.
  • We use natural, organic products free of harmful chemicals to clean and sanitize our accommodations.
  • We promote the cultural value of our town with guided tours arranged with a local expert in archaeology and ancient history.
  • We promote awareness of the valley's and the Basque Country's main tourist attractions, including its culinary offerings.
  • We take into account the ecological footprint of our activities and measure each step we take, first studying how it affects our town, its inhabitants, and the entire Valdegovía Valley.
  • We are delighted when our guests integrate into the peaceful life of Valdegovía and share evenings and conversations in the garden with our neighbors.
  • When we need to hire independent professionals, we first go to those who are closest and from them, to those who generate employment with decent conditions and show passion for their work.
  • We seek partnerships with other entrepreneurs who share social and environmental values and who promote projects that add value not only to themselves but also to their communities.
  • Since September 2022, we have had a 6 kWp self-consumption photovoltaic system, which helps us reduce greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. We are therefore continuing to take steps to reduce our carbon footprint and that of our guests.
