Home / The Esfoyaza. Our grandparents' works.
One of the traditional celebrations of "LA SERONDA" (autumn) and held in rural Asturias for centuries, when corn was the livelihood of the family and, to a lesser extent, of the animals, was "LA ESFOYAZA." The Esfoyaza was a task carried out as a community and in which the town's residents participated. Young men and women collaborated in the various esfoyazas held in the town's homes. The esfoyaza was not only a community task; it was also a meeting place where, during or after the task was completed, festivities, games, and entertaining took place. The invitation to the participants in the "Esfoyaza" was known as "GARULLA." It was common for the owners of the house to invite those who had helped them once the "Esfoyaza" was over. At the "Garulla," people could enjoy tortillas, hot corn flour with ham, cheeses, apples, hazelnuts, walnuts, cider, and more.
