The “millennial” chestnut trees of Apellániz. Izki

Nestled in the Izki Natural Park, the heart and lungs of the Montaña Alavesa, lies Apellániz. The best-preserved chestnut grove in the Basque Country grows on 13 hectares.

Description

Through this experience, we'll visit chestnut trees—some of them thousands of years old—in a magical setting, filled with stories and legends, mythological beings, and a great diversity of flora and fauna. We'll plant, graft, pruning, and harvest, learning how to manage the chestnut grove for its protection and conservation.

Ecotourism Commitment

Since the beginning of our activity, we have been collaborating in the recovery of the Apellániz chestnut grove. Our latest related activity was a grafting course (April 2024), taught by us and organized by bionekazaritza.
Collaboration with various television programs Aquí la Tierra (tv1), A bocados (etb2), Agrosfera (tv2) in which the various activities offered by agrotourism are shown (beekeeping, horticulture, fruit growing, ethnography, conservation)

Sustainable tourism

At Agroturismo Izarrate, we are committed to protecting the environment and respecting our surroundings. Therefore, we adopt measures that help reduce the impact of our activities by reducing energy, water, and other resource consumption, such as:
● Renewable energy (pellet stoves and aerothermal energy) for hot water supply and part of the heating.
● Double-glazed doors and windows with air chambers to prevent energy loss
● Energy-efficient lighting and appliances, as well as systems that improve their efficiency.
● Water-saving systems, such as aerators on faucets and dual-flush cisterns.
● We separate and properly manage our waste, and we have bins in the apartments so our guests can do the same. We know that sustainable tourism can contribute to the development of our region, and that's why we encourage all our guests to join this commitment by making responsible use of water and energy, purchasing local products, and visiting artisans and traditional producers.
