Picos de Europa essential

This 3-day experience to discover the Picos de Europa is the result of a collaborative effort between some of the best Asturian ecotourism companies in the Picos de Europa National Park and the rural mountain hotel El Rexacu.

Description

It's a collection of three half-day activities, one for each day of the program, that will show you the best of nature, cultural heritage, and ethnography in this emblematic national park: the "Shepherds and Biodiversity" route, "Lakes of Covadonga. Nature and Ethnography," and "Observation of Chamois and Alpine Flora and Fauna in the Glacial Zone."

The experience in detail

Programme

Day 1. "Shepherds and Biodiversity" Route
The "Shepherds and Biodiversity" route (4 hours) offers a unique experience in the Picos de Europa National Park aboard an electric van. Through six stops, you'll discover the connection between local shepherds and the region's biodiversity, from the history of transterminant shepherding to the making of Gamonéu cheese. These stops include panoramic views, visits to watering holes and high-altitude settlements, as well as explorations of raptor habitats and traditional huts. The route culminates in a cheese-ripening cave. Remain of the day and overnight stay at Hotel Rexacu.
Day 2. Lakes of Covadonga: Nature and ethnography
Join us for a unique experience of nature observation and interpretation in the magical landscapes of the Lakes of Covadonga. We'll explore the secrets of glacial formation that gave rise to these impressive lakes, as well as the profound influence of pastoral life that has shaped these lands over millennia. Then, we'll delve into the Vega de Enol, where we'll breathe in the pure mountain air and connect with the essence of shepherds' lives in this corner of paradise. We'll discover the ancient knowledge and traditions that have given rise to the exquisite Gamoneu del Puerto cheese, made with love and dedication by expert hands. On our return, we'll pause at the Mirador de la Reina, a place where the majesty of nature merges with human commitment to its preservation. Here, we'll marvel at the exciting bearded vulture reintroduction project, passionately led by the Foundation for the Conservation of the Bearded Vulture (FCQ). Equipped with binoculars and spotting scopes, we will watch the birds soaring through the skies, an experience that will leave our hearts filled with gratitude and admiration for the beauty and biodiversity of our planet. The rest of the day will be spent at the El Rexacu rural hotel.
Day 3. Observation of Chamois and Alpine Flora and Fauna in the Glacier Zone
We'll conclude this exciting immersion in the Picos de Europa on this third day with a morning in search of the most unique alpine species. With the help of our 4x4 and permits to drive on restricted-access trails, we head into the heart of the Picos de Europa, into one of the most spectacular and inaccessible valleys in the entire Park. This is a place where chamois demonstrate their agility in the high mountains, but where other key species also hide, such as bears, wolves, bearded vultures, wallcreepers, butterflies, orchids, and even carnivorous plants. This is a place where our ancestors found shelter for thousands of years, and where, as we transitioned from hunter-gatherers to shepherds, we learned through transhumance that it was possible to live in harmony with nature. A place where, although it may seem incredible, one of the last families still lives and grazes in that way, making cheese that is then matured in nearby caves with the love and enthusiasm of knowing they were almost the last to do so. A journey back in time through glacial moraines, erratic songs left by the ice in a breathtaking landscape, under skies where bearded vultures, Egyptian vultures, and peregrine falcons fly... a sky where wolves howl at night... and where the last shepherds gaze. A wonderful excuse to go out looking for chamois and encounter them, and even more so with the help of a graduate in the Environment specializing in flora and fauna who, with the greatest possible respect, will convey to you how fortunate we are to be able to enjoy such a privileged place.
