Gipuzkoa, Euskadi. <\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>What geographical and mountainous features characterise the surroundings of Arrikrutz Cave?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The location could not be better, halfway between the town of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/turismo.euskadi.eus\/es\/top-viajes\/onati-monumental-en-el-interior-de-gipuzkoa\/webtur00-exptop\/es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O\u00f1ati<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with its Renaissance treasures, and the ultra-modern Sanctuary of Ar\u00e1nzazu, right in the heart of the karst system of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.euskadi.eus\/en\/natural-areas\/aizkorri-aratz-natural-park\/webtur00-content\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aizkorri-Aratz<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Natural Park. The cave is hidden in one of the folds of the Aizkorri mountain range, the great wall that separates the rugged landscape of Gipuzkoa from the plains of \u00c1lava. A geographical curiosity: Arrikrutz is located practically at the point where the three Basque provinces meet. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What makes Arrikrutz Cave special?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It forms part of the Gesaltza-Arrikrutz karst system, which comprises more than 15 kilometres of interconnected underground galleries, the largest in the whole of Gipuzkoa, but you can rest easy: there is no need to explore all of them. The visit lasts 60 minutes and reveals Gallery 53 by means of a floating walkway with dynamic lighting, showcasing an underground river and enormous stalactites. We are talking about a space formed more than 100 million years ago. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Tell me an interesting fact about Arrikrutz Cave!<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The undisputed king of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.euskadi.eus\/en\/cultural-heritage\/arrikrutz-cave\/webtur00-content\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arrikrutz<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the cave lion, or rather its remains, the first and most complete specimen of its kind found anywhere on the Iberian Peninsula. The animal grew to more than one metre in height, weighed over 250 kilograms and was discovered in the cave in the 1960s, half a century after the first explorations began. Its scientific name is Panthera Leo Spelaea and it inhabited these landscapes during the Late Pleistocene. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What do you recommend doing after visiting it? <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before returning to the main road, do not forget to visit the nearby cave and hermitage of Sandaili, or San El\u00edas de Araotz, one of the most charming and magical places in Euskadi. When you reach the road connecting O\u00f1ati and Arantzazu, either direction will be a good choice: the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tourism.euskadi.eus\/en\/cultural-heritage\/sanctuary-of-arantzazu\/webtur00-content\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sanctuary of the patron saint of Gipuzkoa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was a daring architectural and artistic undertaking that did not even please the ecclesiastical authorities who commissioned it. Cantabria<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>What geographical and mountainous features characterise the surroundings of El Soplao Cave?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/turismodecantabria.com\/lugar-interes\/el-soplao\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El Soplao<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is located in the Sierra de Arnero, between the municipalities of Herrer\u00edas, Vald\u00e1liga and Rionansa, at an altitude of 540 metres, in a former mining area. Despite being 20 kilometres from the coast and having a modest altitude, the Cantabrian Sea and beautiful neighbouring mountain formations such as the Picos de Europa, Pe\u00f1a Sagra and the Sierra del Cuera, already in Asturias, can be seen from the area surrounding the cave.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What makes El Soplao Cave special?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everything is the work of a master craftsperson called \u2018geology\u2019, with the invaluable assistance of water and no human intervention. In fact, even while an army of miners battled inside these cavities day after day to extract zinc and lead from their depths, they decided to preserve what is now known as the \u2018Sistine Chapel\u2019 of underground geology. What are its most significant \u2018works\u2019? One of the world\u2019s largest concentrations of helictites, calcareous formations that grow in seemingly impossible directions, defying gravity, with densities of up to 4,000 helictites per square metre in some areas. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Tell me an interesting fact about El Soplao Cave!<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same people who chose not to alter the cave were the ones who named it El Soplao. This was the name given to the current of air created when, during excavations through solid rock, they broke into an underground gallery. On this occasion, when they discovered this \u2018Sistine Chapel\u2019, the \u2018soplao\u2019 that cooled their faces came with an enormous surprise. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What do you recommend doing after visiting it? <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It would be unusual to arrive anywhere in Cantabria and not have a wide range of attractive places within a radius of no more than 20 kilometres. Here, of course, this rule also applies. Would you like a coastal town where you can eat seafood or simply relax on the beach? <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/turismodecantabria.com\/municipios\/san-vicente-de-la-barquera\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Vicente de la Barquera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. An Indiano town featuring one of the few works by Antonio Gaud\u00ed built outside Catalonia? <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/turismodecantabria.com\/municipios\/comillas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Comillas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Teverga, Asturias. <\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>What geographical and mountainous features characterise the surroundings of Huerta Cave?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is located in the Foz de la Estrechura gorge, literally wedged between the Sierra de la Sobia and Pe\u00f1a Vigueras, within <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ingreenspain.es\/en\/reserva-ecoturista\/espacio-natural\/parque-natural-y-reserva-de-la-biosfera-de-las-ubinas-la-mesa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Las Ubi\u00f1as-La Mesa Natural Park,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> very close to the Teverga Prehistory Park. It is important to remember the words \u2018gorge\u2019, \u2018narrowness\u2019 and \u2018wedged\u2019, because they perfectly describe this landscape enclosed between great walls of Carboniferous limestone.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What makes Huerta Cave special?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With around 14.5 kilometres of galleries, it is the second-largest cave in Asturias. It acts as a sinkhole and underground channel for the River Sampedro, or Val de Sampedro, and is arranged across three levels: a permanently flooded lower level, an intermediate level and an upper level, the most accessible one, containing stalactites, stalagmites, columns and underground lakes. There are two types of visit and both must be undertaken with a guide. The first is the walkway visit, an itinerary lasting approximately 50 minutes that runs through the interior of the cave and is suitable for most visitors. The second option is a more demanding route that follows the course of the river and usually lasts between 2 and 3 hours. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Tell me an interesting fact about Huerta Cave!<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Humans will not be the only ones moving around here. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.turismoasturias.es\/en\/descubre\/naturaleza\/espacios-protegidos\/cueva-huerta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cavern<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is home to the largest colony of common bent-wing bats, Miniopterus schreibersii, in Asturias and one of the most important in the north-western Iberian Peninsula; these specimens migrate up to 350 kilometres between different shelters.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What do you recommend doing after visiting it? <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the visit, should you feel like getting some fresh air, you can follow the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.turismoasturias.es\/en\/senderismo\/rutas\/familias\/senda-del-oso-tunon-caranga\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senda del Oso<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> towards Proaza and Tu\u00f1\u00f3n, or visit the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.turismoasturias.es\/en\/descubre\/cultura\/museos-y-espacios-culturales\/espacios-culturales\/parque-de-la-prehistoria-de-teverga\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teverga Prehistory Park<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> itself, just a few minutes from the cave.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6818\" src=\"https:\/\/ingreenspain.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/COVA-DO-REI-CINTOLO.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1440\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ingreenspain.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/COVA-DO-REI-CINTOLO.jpg 1440w, https:\/\/ingreenspain.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/COVA-DO-REI-CINTOLO-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ingreenspain.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/COVA-DO-REI-CINTOLO-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1440px) 100vw, 1440px\" \/><\/h2>\n<h2><b>Cova do Rei Cintolo (Mondo\u00f1edo. Galicia)<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>What geographical and mountainous features characterise the area surrounding Cova do Rei Cintolo?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is located in Supena, in the parish of Argomoso, deep within the limestone interior of the lush Monte A Gra\u00f1a, beside the valley of the River Vali\u00f1adares, in the region of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.turismo.gal\/que-visitar\/xeodestinos\/marina-lucense?langId=en_US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Mari\u00f1a Lucense<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, close to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.turismo.gal\/localizador-de-recursos\/-\/sit\/que-visitar\/mondonedo?langId=en_US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mondo\u00f1edo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and its spectacular cathedral, which we have already discussed on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ingreenspain.es\/en\/symphonies-carved-in-stone-would-you-like-to-join-us-on-a-tour-of-the-cathedrals-of-green-spain\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">another<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> occasion. Unlike the landscapes of Asturias, the contours here are gentle and the peaks less imposing: we are in a humid part of Galicia very close to the sea, where meadows are the norm. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What makes Cova do Rei Cintolo special?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the largest <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.turismo.gal\/recurso\/-\/detalle\/33792\/cova-do-rei-cintolo?langId=en_US&amp;ctre=8&amp;tp=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">natural cave<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Galicia, with more than 7,500 metres of galleries distributed across three main levels. It is karstic in origin and lies in terrain containing slate, which gives it a distinctive geological character. Inside, there are stalactites, stalagmites, columns, flowstones, a small lake and an underground current known as the River Celtas. Do we really need to reveal any more spoilers?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Tell me an interesting fact about Cova do Rei Cintolo!<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It gives its name to a legendary Galician story: Rei Cintolo is said to have ruled the kingdom of Br\u00eda until a sorcerer, embittered by the love of his daughter Xila for a count, caused the entire kingdom to sink beneath the ground. Legend has it that, even today, on certain mornings, the princess can be seen at the entrance to the cave combing her golden hair as she waits for someone to break the spell. We cannot guarantee that getting up early to try your luck will be worthwhile. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What do you recommend doing after visiting it? <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How about a plan involving stretching your legs? The Water Hiking Route connects the Mondo\u00f1edo neighbourhood of Os Mu\u00ed\u00f1os with the cave, passing through what some have called the \u2018<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.turismo.gal\/the-little-venice-of-mondonedo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Venice of Mondo\u00f1edo\u2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; you can also end the day by walking through Mondo\u00f1edo\u2019s historic centre and visiting its cathedral.
