An ecotourism reserve is a fragile space that we all build and enjoy together. Therefore, it is the responsibility of those of us who visit them to follow certain rules in order to achieve something very simple: that the places we pass through remain exactly as they were. If, in addition, it is possible to leave them even better (by picking up a wrapper that you did not throw away), you will have done Mother Nature a great service. We have created a small protocol so that you can move around our ecotourism reserve. Read it carefully, but be warned: almost all of these behaviours can be summed up in three virtues: courtesy, empathy and common sense. Welcome to Green Spain!<\/em><\/p>\n

Before leaving home<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/h3>\n

1. A well-informed ecotourist is worth two<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Each protected area has its own access rules, visitor limits and sensitive periods, as is the case in the Muniellos Integral Nature Reserve, where only 20 visitors are allowed per day. Checking this information in advance helps avoid putting pressure on resources that are not designed for mass tourism.<\/p>\n

2. Do not put off until tomorrow the reservations you can make today<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Many of Green Spain\u2019s most valuable places, from protected forests to wineries with a designation of origin, operate with limited visitor numbers. Arriving without a reservation not only causes personal frustration, but can also lead people to seek alternative access routes that damage the environment.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/h3>\n

3. When the weather is bad, put on a brave face\u2026 and enjoy even better experiences!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Visiting during the low season reduces pressure on ecosystems and small villages, while also allowing you to enjoy a more authentic and less crowded experience. Many mountain routes and wildlife-watching activities, such as observing the Cantabrian brown bear, are also safer and more respectful outside the busiest months. Remember: one of Green Spain\u2019s most valuable assets is its silence.<\/p>\n

4. Traveller, there is a path, do not make your own path as you walk<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Leaving the path to take a photograph or a shortcut may seem harmless, but it compacts the soil, damages vegetation and disrupts the habitat of sensitive species. Trails exist precisely to concentrate human impact within a minimal strip of land.<\/p>\n

5. The countryside belongs to everyone (but do not take anything)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Mushrooms, flowers, stones, shells or branches all fulfil an ecological function in their place of origin, even if they may seem insignificant on their own. The golden rule of a good ecotourist is simple: take nothing but photographs.<\/p>\n

6. Treat wildlife as you would like to be treated<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Getting too close to wild animals, even with good intentions, causes stress and can alter their natural behaviour, especially during the breeding season. In areas such as Cangas del Narcea, where people coexist with the Cantabrian brown bear, using binoculars and remaining silent is the only responsible way to enjoy wildlife watching.<\/p>\n

7. Take all your rubbish with you, including organic waste<\/strong><\/h3>\n

A piece of fruit peel or a cigarette butt can take months or years to decompose and does not form part of the local ecosystem. Carrying a small bag for your own waste should be as automatic a habit as carrying water.<\/p>\n

8. Silence is golden<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The sound of music, shouted conversations or phone calls disrupts the experience of those seeking silence and can scare away local wildlife. The soundscape of an Atlantic forest or a Cantabrian cliff is, in itself, part of the heritage worth protecting.<\/p>\n

9. Do not bathe or wash with soap in rivers and streams<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Although using “biodegradable” soaps may seem environmentally friendly, any chemical product alters the balance of these ecosystems, especially in salmon fishing areas such as those found in Green Spain. The water in these rivers is home to species that are highly sensitive to any chemical alteration.<\/p>\n

10. Respect fishing bans and regulations<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Activities such as salmon fishing are regulated through permits and specific seasons precisely to guarantee the survival of fish populations. Nature tourism also means learning about these regulations before approaching rivers and estuaries.<\/p>\n

11. Treat historical heritage as if it were your own home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Touching frescoes, climbing onto medieval walls or carving initials into centuries-old stones are actions that cause irreversible damage to castles, palaces and monasteries such as those scattered across Cantabria, Galicia, Asturias and the Basque Country. What has survived for centuries deserves to survive our visit too.<\/p>\n

12. Keep your voice and behaviour moderate in small historic centres.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Most of Green Spain\u2019s villages have small year-round populations, for whom tourism is also part of their daily lives. Behaving with the same discretion you would show in someone else\u2019s home is the best way to ensure you will be welcomed back.<\/p>\n

13. Support craftspeople and local producers<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Buying handcrafted products and wines with a designation of origin, or eating in local restaurants, directly supports the economy of these rural areas. Responsible tourism is not only about avoiding damage, but also about leaving a positive economic impact.<\/p>\n

14. Prioritise shared or public transport whenever possible<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Travelling in a single car between several towns reduces emissions and congestion on rural mountain roads, which are often narrow and used by livestock. Many areas of Green Spain also have perfectly signposted cycling and walking routes as an alternative.<\/p>\n

15. Park only in designated areas<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Leaving your car on roadsides, meadows or access roads to private properties creates conflicts with local residents and can damage crops or grazing land. Designated parking areas exist precisely to minimise this impact.<\/p>\n

16. Leave the place better than you found it<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Picking up a small piece of rubbish left by someone else, closing any field gates you open or reporting damage are very simple gestures that always make a difference. Ultimately, the Green Spain ecotourism reserve is sustained by the sum of these small (and always commendable) individual actions.<\/p>\n

17. Instagram, yes\u2026 but responsibly<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Posting photographs of little-known places can make them popular overnight and cause overcrowding that the location is not prepared to cope with.
